How to Make a Visiting Card: A Step-by-Step Guide (Paper, PVC or NFC)

Short answer: to make a visiting card, decide what it must say, pick the size, design it at print size with 3 mm bleed, choose the material (paper, PVC, metal or NFC), check a proof carefully, then order. A free online maker can give you a quick design; for a printed card that looks professional, send a print-ready file to a printer or ask a supplier to design it for you.

Step 1: Decide what the card is for

Write down the one thing you want a person to do after they get your card: call you, message you on WhatsApp, visit a shop, see your portfolio. Put that action first. A card that tries to do five things does none well.

Step 2: Collect your details

You need:

  • Your full name, as you want it written.
  • Your job title or what you do.
  • One phone number, plus WhatsApp if it is a different number.
  • A website, profile link or QR code.
  • Your logo as a vector file (AI, SVG or PDF) or a high-resolution image.

Check spellings of every name and number now. Reprints are usually caused by mistakes at this stage.

Step 3: Pick the size

Most cards are 3.5 × 2 inches or 90 × 50 mm; PVC and NFC cards are usually 85.6 × 54 mm. See visiting card size for the full table, pixel sizes and bleed.

Step 4: Design it

Use a design tool or a template, and set the document to the card size plus 3 mm bleed on each side. Keep text 3 mm inside the edge. Use one or two colours and one font. Visiting card design ideas shows twelve layouts to adapt.

Free online makers are quick, but check that you can export a print-quality PDF at 300 DPI and that the file has no watermark. Many free exports are low resolution and look blurred when printed.

Step 5: Choose the material

Option Best for Things to know
Paper The lowest cost for a large print run Details cannot be changed after printing
PVC plastic Durable cards with full-colour print Standard bank-card size
Metal A premium first impression Metal side printed in one colour
NFC card Cards that open a digital profile when tapped The printed card can stay simple; the profile is editable

If you are not sure, read visiting card printing options for a comparison.

Step 6: Check the proof and order

Ask for a proof or mockup and check:

  • Spelling of names, titles, email addresses and website.
  • Every digit of the phone number.
  • Colours (screens show colours differently from print).
  • That nothing sits too close to the edge.
  • If there is a QR code, scan it with two phones.

Approve in writing, then order. For team orders, send one spreadsheet of staff details rather than separate messages.

Making an NFC visiting card

An NFC card follows the same steps, with two additions. First, you build a digital profile: photo or logo, phone, WhatsApp, email, website, location and social links. Second, the card is programmed with a link to that profile and tested before delivery. At our shop we prepare a free design mockup, and we print nothing until you approve it. See NFC visiting cards.

Common questions

Can I make a visiting card on my phone? Yes. Many design apps export a PDF. Export at the highest quality and check the size before you send it to a printer.

How long does it take? It depends on how fast you approve the design and on the printer. For our NFC cards, nothing is printed until you approve the mockup; ask us on WhatsApp for the timing of your order. Delivery details are on our shipping and delivery page.

What if I only have a low-quality logo? Tell your printer or designer. They can often recreate it as a vector file.
