You tap a card against someone’s phone and your details appear on their screen. No app, no pairing, no typing. It looks like magic the first time you see it.
It is not magic. It is a very small chip, no battery, and a trick of physics that has been around for years. Here is exactly what happens in that one second, and why it matters when you are choosing a card.
The one second explanation
Inside the card there is a tiny chip and a loop of copper wire running around the edge. That loop is an antenna.
Your phone is constantly emitting a weak radio field looking for anything nearby that might respond. When the card enters that field, the field induces a small electrical current in the copper loop. That current is enough to power the chip.
The chip wakes up, sends back the one thing it stores, and the phone acts on it. Total time, under a second.
That is the entire mechanism. The reason it feels instant is that nothing is connecting, pairing or authenticating. The card is not a device talking to another device. It is a passive object being read.
Why there is no battery
This is the part people find hardest to believe, and it is the most elegant bit of the design.
The card draws all the power it needs from the phone’s own radio field. The technical name is inductive coupling, and it is the same principle as a wireless charging pad, just at a far smaller scale.
The practical consequences are worth knowing. There is nothing to charge, ever. There is nothing to run flat at the worst possible moment. There are no moving parts and no components that degrade with use. A well made NFC card will still work in five years, sitting in your wallet the whole time.
It also means the card only does anything when a phone is held against it. It is not transmitting in your pocket, and it is not tracking you.
What is actually stored on the chip
Almost nothing, and this surprises people.
A typical NFC business card chip holds a few hundred bytes. For comparison, a single photo on your phone is several million bytes. There is no room for a photo, a logo, or a full profile.
What it stores is a link. One short web address.
So the chip is not holding your business card at all. It is holding the doorway to it. When someone taps, their phone reads that link and opens it in the browser, and everything they then see, your name, photo, phone number, email, social links, is coming from the internet, not from the card.
This is the single most useful thing to understand about NFC cards, because it explains everything else about how they behave.
Why that matters: static and dynamic encoding
There are two ways a card can be set up, and the difference decides whether your card lasts.
Static encoding writes your details directly onto the chip. Your name and number are hardcoded. It works, but the moment anything changes, the card is finished. New number, new job title, new company, and you are ordering a replacement.
Dynamic encoding writes a link to an online profile you control. The chip never changes. The profile behind it can change as often as you like, and every card already in circulation delivers the new version automatically.
For an individual this is a convenience. For a company it is the whole decision. Fifty static cards means fifty reprints every time someone is promoted or leaves. Fifty dynamic cards means editing profiles from a dashboard.

What happens on the other person’s phone
Nothing needs installing. That is worth repeating because it is the most common objection people raise.
On Android, NFC reading has been built into the operating system for over a decade. The phone detects the tag, reads the link and offers to open it. On most handsets it simply opens.
On iPhone, support starts at the iPhone 7. From iOS 14 onward the phone reads tags in the background with the screen on, so there is no app to launch and no setting to find. A notification banner appears, the user taps it, and the profile opens.
The recipient does not need an account, an app, or any prior knowledge of what NFC is. They tap and read. That low friction is the entire reason these cards work in practice.
Where to tap, because this trips people up
The NFC antenna in a phone is not in the middle of the back. It is usually near the top.
On iPhone, the reader sits at the very top of the phone, behind the camera area. Tap the card there, not at the centre.
On Android, it is usually in the upper third of the back panel, though it varies by manufacturer.
If a tap does not register, nine times out of ten it is one of three things. The card was held against the wrong part of the phone. NFC is switched off in settings. Or there is a thick case, particularly one with a metal plate for a magnetic car mount, blocking the field.
None of those are faults with the card, and all three are worth knowing before you hand one to a client.
Does it work through a phone case?
Usually yes. NFC reads through plastic, silicone, leather and most standard cases without trouble.
What does block it is metal. A metal case, a metal ring holder, or the steel plate people stick inside a case for magnetic mounts will all stop the field reaching the antenna. Thick wallet cases with several cards stacked inside can weaken it too.
If someone’s phone will not read your card, ask them to try with the case off. That usually settles it.
What the QR code is for
Every card from NFCBusinessCard.pk carries a printed QR code as well as the chip, and it is not decoration.
Some phones have NFC disabled. Some older budget handsets never had the hardware. Sometimes you are handing your details to someone across a table, or presenting to a room, or on a video call where no tapping is possible.

Is it secure?
Reasonably, and the design helps.
The range is the main protection. NFC works over about four centimetres. Someone would have to hold a reader physically against your card to interact with it, which is not a realistic threat model for a business card.
The card is also passive, so it only responds when powered by a nearby field. It is inert in your wallet.
And because the chip stores only a public web link, there is nothing sensitive on it to steal. The link is the same one you hand out deliberately dozens of times a week.
The sensible precaution is on the profile side rather than the card side. Only put information on your profile that you are happy for anyone to see, because that is exactly what it is for.
What you can put on the profile
Since the content lives online rather than on the chip, there is no real limit. Typical setups include your name and job title, a photo or company logo, a phone number that dials when tapped, an email address, a WhatsApp button, your website, social profiles, a location map, a booking or calendar link, a portfolio or price list, and a save to contacts button.
One piece of advice: resist filling it. Every extra button reduces the chance someone presses the one that matters. Decide what you most want a new contact to do, whether that is call you, save your number or visit your site, and make that the obvious action.
